I took these portraits during an afternoon hanging out with this crew of Jordanian youngsters, which I suspected to be truants. With scraps of English, they described themselves to me: "The matching pair we call 'the potatoes'" "The cool kid in the group has terrible grades in school" "The one with good English lived in Switzerland for a summer". The tall, quiet one wanted his photo taken to share on social media. The grumpy, stout one kicked rocks while straggling at the back of the group. At times we walked in silence; at times we roared with laughter at jokes I barely understood. For a few hours, I was a guest of honor in their fraternal tribe as we explored the roman ruins of a city they used to call Philadelphia.
